Several years ago, this shifter was discontinued by Hurst and it was a sad day in the SRT4 community. Modern Performance is very happy to bring the Hurst shifter back, and make it available again for all Neon SRT4 owners! In the style department, nothing beats the look of the polished stalk with the Hurst name etched into the side along with the white knob on top.

Benefits of the Hurst shifter:

  • 35% reduction in throw, and reduced height as well.
  • Shift stops prevent you from stretching shifter cables and damaging shift forks inside the transmission (this is a critical feature that EVERY SRT4 owner should have in their cars to prevent costly transmission repair).
  • Solid shifter base bushings improve the firm feel of your shifts and the shfiter.
  • Great looking rectangular polished Hurst shifter stalk with legendary Hurst cue ball.
  • Fits all manual transmission 00-05 Neons, and 03-05 SRT-4's
  • Hurst shifter demo in a 2003 Dodge SRT4

    Feels perfect in your hands!

Note: The kit must be used in conjunction with a STOCK shifter assembly, it will not install onto ANY modified shifter, including Mopar or Maddgog STS's due to the other shifters having modified cross levers. Please note: since this shifter works with any 00-05 Neon and 03-05 SRT-4 if you want a Hurst shifter but have a Mopar short shifter, or Maddog, you can get a shifter out of any of these other vehicles, and then modify it with the Hurst kit.

What do you mean must be used in conjunction with stock shifter assembly. My car came with a short throw but I'm confused as to how it will work. I just purchased this kit

      • Modern Performance

The Hurst has special modified components that need to be used with a stock shifter assembly. If you attempt to use the Hurst with an aftermarket shifter like the Mopar it will not work.

Are the discontinued hurst shifter for the nsrt any different then the new release one. Cause I bought a hurst shifter off a local guy, and it locks out of first and reverse. I see pictures of it with a black spacer, and I see some pictures of it without a black spacer.

The Hurst shifter has not changed. We think the problem you are having is due to you installing the Hurst on a Mopar short throw shifter which will not work. If you have a shifter with the black spacer, that is a Mopar short throw shifter and it will not work correctly with the Hurst shifter.

If they were discontinued by Hurst and they no longer produce them, how are you able to provide them? Are they intended for use on a different model with alterations made to work with the srt4? Thanks

These are genuine SRT4 Hurst shifters, brand new, they are designed for the Neon SRT4 and work like a champ. Dont worry so much, you'll love the new shifter!

I have a 2000 Neon with the 5-speed manual transmission. Can I install this shifter on my car or is there something about the SRT transmission/shifter that is different?

This shifter will also work on any manual transmission 00-05 Neon.

Will the Hurst short throw shifter work on a 2004 PT Cruiser?
      1 Answer
      • customer service rep

Its not a direct bolt on as far as we know, but with some modification we think it could be installed in a PT. We have no way of checking ourselves.

Can this be used with the first generation (95-99) neon
      1 Answer
      • customer service rep

Yes it can, but it will need to be modified. We don't have instructions on what to do, but have seen several customers with this in a first gen Neon.

How do you know if you have a mopar short throw. I bought that car and he said it was short throw but I don't think it is

Please see the photos on this page to see the difference between the stock shifter and the Mopar short throw shifter. If you have a stock shifter the Hurst shifter kit will work, if you have the Mopar short throw shifter the Hurst will not work with it.

Hello is the tip a screw on or bolt on ? I've tried purcashing a few screw on knobs but for some reason the shifter I have is a semi circle that can't take any screw ons. Thanks
      1 Answer
      • Customer Service Rep

The factory knob has a push on design that's proprietary. You can use screw on knobs as long as they have go past the half circle locking piece. Perhaps stop fooling around with universal cheesy knobs and look at our knob we made for the SRT-4 that fits this shifter and the stock shifter perfectly. Search for part number 601521-8 in the search bar.

Not a question, but information for users of the Hurst kit. You CAN use this product with the Mopar or PT Cruiser (NOT GT) shifter assembly for the SRT4 or '00-'05 Neon with manual transmission. If fact, you get a symmetrical throw reduction when used with either of the above two shifter assemblies by retaining the black plastic spacer provided with either assembly. Hurst kit can also be used on the PT/GT Cruiser, but you must use that vehicle's shifter assembly as the basis for your Hurst kit.

Am I able to order this with the black ball instead of the white?
      1 Answer
      • Customer Service Rep

The Hurst kit comes exactly as shown and there are no substitutions. If you want a different knob you can order it separately.

Not so much a question but a tip for those who don't know: the instructions that come with the kit say to remove your factory shift knob by lifting it straight up firmly. I have a 2005 SXT and that's not how the knob comes off, but I don't know which models may be like mine.

If you pull up and it doesn't budge, try pushing the knob straight down with a good bit of force--50 lbs or so (as if trying to push the shifter into the floor). If it moves, push down and twist. Knob then lifts off.

Does this fit on a Getrag 288S 5 speed on a 2003 PT Cruiser GT?
      1 Answer
      • Customer Service Rep

The GT Cruiser uses a European style shift pattern where reverse is up and to the left, which is not compatible with this shifter.

Will this work for a PT Cruiser GT?

      • Customer Service Rep

No this will not. Please use the search bar and enter Hurst, and you should see the custom kits we have made for the PT.
