Clutch Buyers Information Guide, 03-05 Neon SRT-4

One of the most commonly asked questions we get at Modern Performance is; "what clutch should I get for my 03-05 Neon SRT-4"?

This guide, is designed to explain everything you need to know about deciding on, and buying a clutch.

First of all, its very important when replacing your clutch to have a clutch that can handle the power your making now, but also in the future. If your stock turbo now, but are about to order a big turbo, you need to worry about the power handling capacity. Its also important to NOT buy too big of a clutch that's going to be too hard to drive. You should not exceed the power rating of your clutch or else it will slip and or wear fast.

Secondly, ALL clutches sold by Modern Performance come complete with pressure plate, friction disc, flywheel(steel, aluminum or chromoly) and throw out bearing. No other parts are needed to make the clutch work.

CLUTCH TORQUE CAPACITY AND DESCRIPTION COMPARISON

  • MOPAR OEM clutch (300 torque)the same clutch your car came from the factory with.
  • Clutch Masters stage 1 (360 torque)Great for SRT-4's with stock turbo, minor bolt-ons. Feels just like stock.
  • Clutch Masters stage 3 (430 torque)This is Clutch Masters most popular clutch. Great for SRT-4's with stock turbo and all bolt-ons, lots of boost, and Stage 3 cars/Most of the big turbos with low boost making no more than 380 hp. Bites a little faster than factory clutch.
  • Clutch Masters stage 4 clutch (550 torque) ONLY for cars making big power, this clutch should only be used with big turbo cars making up to 475 hp at wheels. This is offered in two styles. Six puck which is a little softer for street use, and 4 puck that grabs hard and fast.
  • ACT HDSS (465 torque) This is ACT's most popular clutch. This clutch can handle all the abuse your stock turbo/stage 3 car can throw at it and it can handle most of the big turbos not making more than 420 hp.
  • ACT HDG6 (595 torque) Can handle lots of power, but engages quick and hard.
  • ACT XTSS (540 torque) Hardcore line of clutches, designed for serious abuse and power. Grabs fast, hard to drive on street, can handle lots of shock from drag passes, slicks, and tons of power.
  • ACT XTG6 (695 torque) Hardcore line of clutches, you better be making serious power to consider this one.

ALSO CONSIDER REPLACING
Also when you replace your clutch, its the perfect time to replace the clutch pivot fork (a known wear item that can cause engagement issues) along with the clutch pivot ball. These are accessible when you've got the transmission pulled out.

For those of you concerned about your other driveline parts like the master and slave cylinder, you can replace those now if you wish but we usually only recommend replacing those if you have inconsistent clutch engagement/disengagement or if you see the clutch master or slave leaking. If you've got a lot of miles, or use out of the master or slave, its not a bad thing to just replace them as a maintenance item as well.

MODULAR VERSUS NON-MODULAR
We get a lot of customers calling us and stating: "I didn't get my flywheel". This happens to Neon SRT-4 owners not familiar with modular clutches. A modular clutch is one where the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate are all riveted together. A non modular clutch is where they you bolt everything together into one assembly. The only difference between the two is that you can replace a slipping clutch disc easier with a non modular where a modular is all one piece.

  • All OEM clutches for the Neon SRT-4 are modular
  • All Clutch Masters clutches with steel flywheel are modular
  • All ACT clutches are NON modular
  • All Clutch Masters clutches with the aluminum flywheel or chromoly flywheel are NON modular.

All Clutch Masters clutches with aluminum/chromoly flywheel and ACT clutches have the starter ring gear built in. All modular clutches have a separate piece, called a flexplate that the starter uses to start the car. If you are converting from non-modular back to modular you'll need the flexplate and bolts to use with the modular clutch.

You'd need to dyno test your car to see how much power your putting down with your certain boost pressure and mods. Most likely with that turbo though, you'd be looking at a ACT HDG6 clutch or perhaps a Clutchmasters stage 4.
